Somers Beach State Park Celebration and Development Plans from FWP

Saturday, April 15th, we celebrated the newest State Park on Flathead Lake’s shores, the Somers Beach State Park. Together with the Flathead Land Trust, Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks, and Montana State Parks Foundation, we were excited to share this accomplishment with you.

In 2021, MT Fish, Wildlife and Parks purchased the 106-acres from the Sliter family - an expansive sandy beach in winter and shallow waters in the summer.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks issued a decision notice for the development of Somers Beach State Park Based on an environmental assessment completed earlier this year, and following consideration of public comments received, the state selected what amenities will be present in the park to support recreation. The development will include paving some gravel surfaces, construction of a gravel road and cul-de-sac so visitors can deliver recreational equipment to the water’s edge, three small cabins on the park’s west side for nightly rental, and two host sites, picnic areas, landscaping, fencing, signage, and restrooms. However, if costs exceed available funding, the group picnic shelter and the hand boat launch may be excluded from construction and installed later should additional funding become available.  The proposal also includes some reinforcement to the dynamic equilibrium beach structure, against higher than anticipated full pool lake elevations experienced in 2022, with the added benefit of providing an expanded visitor-friendly lake shore.  Learn more and view the full decision notice.
