Notes on the Data

The data displayed by the graphs are available from web site of the United States Geological Survey, which maintains a vast network of river gauging stations. The record is continuous from approximately mid-1928 to the present, with limited data available prior to that. Locally, the record for the Flathead River below Polson is the longest, beginning on 1 August 1907. Only the period 1 November 1927 through 31 March 1928 is missing. Records for the river at Columbia Falls begin in 1922, but are incomplete and spotty until mid-1928 (there are some older records for the north, middle, and south forks). In some cases, it is possible to approximate the flow at Columbia Falls by summing the flows of the three forks. The published record for Flathead Lake runs from May, 1928, to the present, except for December of 1928 and January of 1929. Unpublished data evidently exist in the USGS's office in Helena. I generated the graphs using KaleidaGraph 3.51 for the Macintosh.
